    1. Outline of the types of selection

      There are two types of selection for the master's and doctoral programs: regular selection (II) and special selection (III). The eligibility for each selection is different.

      Eligibility refers to the qualifications necessary to apply; it does not mean application success. In addition, "foreign university (graduate school)" in the following text refers to "university (graduate school) physically located overseas."

    2. Submission of the application form

      Applicants for the selections must obtain and submit the application form to the Graduate School of Engineering office. The guidelines for the submission can be found in the following links:

  2. Regular selection

    1. Eligibility

      All foreign applicants who satisfy the conditions of eligibility for graduate school as stipulated by the Graduate School of Engineering Regulations are eligible.

      For those who wish to apply for the doctoral program in regular selection, the applicant must contact their prospective professor (supervisor) in our department and obtain the permission from the professor prior to the application.

    2. Examination time

      For master's program applicants, the examination is held generally in the end of August through the beginning of September. *For 2024 master's program, “Application Schedule B (Winter Exam)” entrance examination will be conducted in the end of January through the beginning of February.

      For doctoral program applicants, selection is held twice a year, generally in the end of August through the beginning of September, and in the end of January through the beginning of February.

    3. Entrance time

      Successful August applicants may enter graduate school in September of the examination year or in April of the following year.

      Successful February applicants may enter graduate school in April of the same year.

    4. Examination outline

      The examination is the same as the examination for Japanese applicants. For the master's program, the first selection is a document screening, and the second selection consists of papers in Mathematics, Physics, and Foreign language (English). The examination for the doctoral program consists of papers in Foreign Language (English) and Technical Knowledge of Precision Engineering (see https://www.pe.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/admission/index.html, for more details about the technical terms).

    5. Application procedure

      Applicants for the doctoral program must obtain permission to apply for the program from the professor whom the applicant desires to study under at graduate school. This means that the applicant must directly contact, consult, and obtain permission from the professor before applying.

      Applicants both for the master's and the doctoral programs must obtain and submit the application form to the Graduate School of Engineering office at the beginning of July. Please note that the application form consists of papers to be submitted to the Graduate School of Engineering as well as to the Department of Precision Engineering.

  3. Special selection

    Special selection is not based on a written examination. Among the foreign students who have graduated from a foreign university (graduate school) and satisfy the graduate school examination eligibility as stipulated in the Graduate School of Engineering Regulations, only those applicants who have achieved a score higher than stipulated scores for the English Qualification Test and GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) are eligible.

    For those who wish to apply for the master’s and doctoral programs in special selection, the applicant must contact their prospective professor (supervisor) in our department and obtain the permission from the professor prior to the application.

  4. Others

    In addition to the above program, there are other systems for the applicants as following.

    1. MEXT (MonbuKagakuSho) scholarship

      The applications from MEXT scholarship applicants are directly handled by the Graduate School of Engineering office, not by the Department of Precision Engineering. The applicants should obtain approval of the professors in our department before the applicants will apply to this scholarship.

      Note that, to enter the Department of Precision Engineering, the applicants must submit the following documents in addition to the regular documents required in the MEXT scholarship program. These documents are used for the decision of the acceptance.

      1. Recommendation from the supervising professor or equivalent for the undergraduate program (in case of Master's program applicants) or master's program (in case of PhD program applicants) at the university currently attending or graduated from. [1 copy, format]
      2. Thesis
        To enter the master's program, graduation thesis or equivalent [1 copy]
        To enter the doctoral program, master's thesis or equivalent [1copy]
        If the thesis is written in other than English or Japanese, a summary in English (1,200 words or more) or Japanese (2,000 characters or more) must be attached.
      3. Research plan written by the applicant (in English or Japanese, 1 A4 page, free format) [1 copy]

    2. IME (International Multidisciplinary Engineering, graduate program)

      As a prerequisite to apply for Department of Precision Engineering through IME program, the applicant needs to achieve scores equal to or higher than the cut-off scores stipulated below for the English Qualification Test (TOEFL or IELTS) and the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations). For the TOEFL iBT score, "MyBest Scores" is not accepted. For the GRE, the verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing scores must be equal to or higher than the cut-off scores in one test.
      All scores are valid for two years.

      TOEFL or IELTS:
      - TOEFL: 80 or higher (iBT or iBT Special Home Edition)
      - IELTS: 6.5 or higher

      GRE or GRE General Test at Home:
      - Verbal: 150 or higher
      - Quantitative: 160 or higher
      - Analytical Writing: 3.0 or higher
